Enchanted by K. M. Shea

Myths & Legends. 136 Pages. 4 Stars

Synopsis:

After she is successfully crowned King of Britain and vanquishes those opposed to her rule, Britt thought life would settle down and she could peacefully pretend to be the real King Arthur and search for the lost Round Table. However, her enemies aren’t cowed yet. King Lot sends his beautiful wife, Morgause, and his four sons to Camelot as ambassadors, but Britt doubts their good will when knight after knight falls in love with the foreign queen.

Merlin reveals that Morgause has cast an enchantment on the knights of Camelot, an enchantment he cannot break. As a result, Britt is betrayed by some of her closest knights and becomes an outcast in her own kingdom. To win back her men, Britt will have to make costly sacrifices, survive attempts against her life, and gain the loyalties of Gawain—the eldest son of King Lot and Queen Morgause.

My Review:

The second book in K. M. Shea’s King Arthur series focused more on Arthur’s inner court. Morgause comes to Camelot with her four sons. It was a fun little twist on her character in the legends. And I was so ridiculously excited to see Gawain. He’s always one of my favorites, and watching him grow into his legends throughout this series was such a treat!

We got to see more of Britt’s passion and heart and conviction for loyalty in this one. I love how she honors her men. It was fun to watch the dynamics between her and her men grow and Britt really begins to exhibit some of Arthur’s classic traits here. We get to watch the process of her earning and winning her men over and that’s one of the coolest things.

I love how Shea draws from the lore and fleshes out beloved stories in her own way. Much like the first one, this one is a light, comedic, easy read. It’s also neat to see how Shea pays tribute to all that Britt’s lost in the first one. She doesn’t just pretend like it never happened—some part of me still hopes there’s redemption for that, but we’ll see!

I’m so enjoying the knights join together one by one, fleshing out our favorite team of knights and lords. They each have their distinct traits and personalities and Shea plays off each one so well, making us fall in love with them all. I adore Kay. We also meet the Sable Knight in this one and Nimue—our Lady of the Lake. It’s neat to see that not all the characters fall in love with Arthur immediately (or even some at all!).

Content: no foul language, very mild fantasy violence (not much in this one actually), and not really any romance either, though Morgause does enchant the men to be besotted with her. Pre-teen safe in my opinion.

Enjoying these!
