Knight Owl by Christopher Denise
Picture Book. 48 Pages. 5 Stars
Synopsis:
A determined Owl builds strength and confidence in this medieval picture book about the real mettle of a hero: wits, humor, and heart.
Since the day he hatched, Owl dreamed of becoming a real knight. He may not be the biggest or the strongest, but his sharp nocturnal instincts can help protect the castle, especially since many knights have recently gone missing. While holding guard during Knight Night Watch, Owl is faced with the ultimate trial—a frightening intruder. It’s a daunting duel by any measure. But what Owl lacks in size, he makes up for in good ideas.
Full of wordplay and optimism, this surprising display of bravery proves that cleverness (and friendship) can rule over brawn.
My Review:
Oh my goodness! This is the cutest little book. I read it in the bookstore and absolutely had to add it to my children’s book collection. This is one I’ll read over and over. I can’t wait to share it with my nieces (and any other littles I come across).
The cover is what drew my attention in the first place. That big full moon and a knight’s suit of armor and the punny title. I had to check it out. And the illustrations inside are beautiful. The stary knights and the old timey feel.
The story itself is adorable–with a fair bit of that punny humor I love so much. It started out cute and I was totally tracking, then it got a little intense and I actually got wrapped up in the story for a second. About halfway through I was like, “Oh, dang. Where’s this going?!” Then that last page did me in. It wrapped up so nicely.
This little sucker took me by surprise. We need more children’s books like this. Humorous, clever, cute, beautiful, suspenseful, intriguing, and courageous. Teach your kids to dream and be noble like Owl.
This looks so fun! 😀
It was adorable!
