The Heir by Kiera Cass

YA Romance. 342 Pages. 5 Stars

22918050

Synopsis:

Princess Eadlyn has grown up hearing endless stories about how her mother and father met. Twenty years ago, America Singer entered the Selection and won the heart of Prince Maxon – and they lived happily ever after. Eadlyn has always found their fairy-tale story romantic, but she has no interest in trying to repeat it. If it were up to her, she’d put off marriage for as long as possible.

But a princess’s life is never entirely her own, and Eadlyn can’t escape her very own Selection—no matter how fervently she protests.

Eadlyn doesn’t expect her story to end in romance. But as the competition begins, one entry may just capture Eadlyn’s heart, showing her all the possibilities that lie in front of her . . . and proving that finding her own happily ever after isn’t as impossible as she’s always thought.

My Review:

I decided to reread this one so I could finally get around to the last book, The Crown, but since I’ve been trying audio books, I listened to it on a road trip. And, I still liked it.

I remembered being annoyed by Eadlyn the first time. And I still was this time. The girl is so stinking self-absorbed. But I also liked that through the story she slowly became aware of her flaws. She’s so distant—and that’s what causes most of her issues—but then, I can sort of relate to her. I struggle not to be distant with those I love, so I can extend her some grace. I’m definitely still curious to see how things go. I clearly have my own preferences in her suitors, but I’m looking forward to seeing her discover her own heart.

I also am very intrigued by the political upheaval. I’d actually forgotten about most of it. (Give me a break; it’s been five years since I’ve read it XD) But I am definitely curious to see how that plays out. I enjoyed the original trilogy and I’ve grown fond of America and Maxon. It’s still really cool to see them a generation later. And, after all the work they’ve put into Illéa, I really, really hope they can stabilize the country and continue to set forth the future they envisioned.

There are a smattering of truly fun characters in this. I love Aaron—but I’m also kinda ticked at him. I mean, come on, dude!! And some of the boys in the selection are truly a delight. I hope we can keep some of them around the palace even after the selection ends! I don’t really have any idea how Cass resolves this, between the country trying to reform and the boys trying to steal Eadlyn’s heart. Illéa may dissolve at this point for all I know! Guess I’ll have to pick the sequel up off my shelf finally!

Content: There are no foul words, very little violence (allusions to rioters and an arson attack, a fist to a face, and that’s about it), and pretty clean romance. There were a few semi-heated kisses and one attempted assault, but it was all tactfully done. I’d feel comfortable giving this one to a teen.

More:

Book 1 in The Selection series is The Selection (5 Stars)

Book 2 is The Elite (5 Stars)

Book 3 is The One (4 Stars)

Book 4 is The Heir (5 Stars)

Book 5 is The Crown (4 Stars)

I have rated the above on Goodreads. You can follow the links for more information. If I go back and reread the original trilogy, then I’ll add reviews to those, since I read them pre-Goodreads days–which also means my rating of them may change when I reread it XD.

The first three must be read in order and the last two must be read in order. I would also very highly recommend reading the original trilogy before the subsequent duology, personally, though it isn’t strictly necessary.

Stay tuned next week for my thoughts on the conclusion to the series!
