Uninvited by Lysa TerKeurst
Devotional. 275 Pages. 5 Stars
Synopsis:
The enemy wants us to feel rejected . . . left out, lonely, and less than. When we allow him to speak lies through our rejection, he pickpockets our purpose. Cripples our courage. Dismantles our dreams. And blinds us to the beauty of Christ’s powerful love.
In Uninvited, Lysa shares her own deeply personal experiences with rejection—from the incredibly painful childhood abandonment by her father to the perceived judgment of the perfectly toned woman one elliptical over.
With biblical depth, gut-honest vulnerability, and refreshing wit, Lysa helps readers:
Release the desire to fall apart or control the actions of others by embracing God-honoring ways to process their hurt.
Know exactly what to pray for the next ten days to steady their soul and restore their confidence.
Overcome the two core fears that feed our insecurities by understanding the secret of belonging.
Stop feeling left out and start believing that “set apart” does not mean “set aside.”
End the cycle of perceived rejection by refusing to turn a small incident into a full blown issue.
My Review:
I read this book as an accompaniment to the study guide, which can be found, along with my thoughts on it, here: Uninvited Study Guide: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely. A group of women at my church chose to go through this study and I decided to join them since I had been given the book by one of my college mentors, but had yet to read it.
Honestly, I wasn’t super impressed by the first session of the study, but as the weeks went on and I began to dig into the study guide and keep up with the reading in the book, the study poured into my heart and filled crevices I’d never given the light of day to before.
Lysa writes with such grace and gentleness in the study that it nearly brings tears to my eyes. She speaks truth and backs it up with the faultless Word of God. The book was absolutely instrumental to the study. I loved her vulnerability, her relatability, and her simplicity. It was as if she were sitting beside me, pushing through these truths with me. Not once did I feel as if she were on the other side of a table, pointing a finger or giving some kind of self-earned wisdom. She was wide open, just like the rest of us. Her approach was stunning, and her words inspired. She spoke as one who walks this journey of healing daily, and I absolutely connected with that.
The book has given me tools and truths that I will, and have, implement in my daily life, reminders of God’s goodness and His faithfulness. This was a truly wonderful experience for me and I will cherish having this book sit on my shelf. I’d very highly recommend it to others, even if just the book without the study.
