My Review:
GUYS I FINISHED!!!! 😀
I love this edition. I’ve had my copy for years and the poor thing is worn in several places (the way it should be!) from so much use. About two years ago, I decided to try (again) to read through the Bible all the way. And I’ve finally done it!
This is not a review on the Bible. This is a review on this specific edition. The VeggieTales Leather Bound NIrV Bible. First of all, this is, in fact, the Bible. The full, complete, and whole Bible. This is not a children’s Bible or a story Bible. This is not a devotional or a commentary. It’s actually the Bible. There are, however, some really neat features that may appeal to parents, children, or just giant kids and VeggieTales lovers like me.
The cover is leather bound, as stated above, in a beautiful VeggieTales green with leather cutouts of Larry and Bob on the front cover. There is the table of contents, of course, and a preface to the NIV Bible, as usual. In the back of the binding, there is also a table of weights and measures, as is often found in Bibles. There can also be found a mini-concordance in the back of the binding. Unique VeggieTales features include Veggie Values, an Index to Veggie Values, full color VeggieTales Stories, Book Introductions, and Remember This.
The Veggie Values are little blurbs scattered throughout the Bible that point out a selection of verses that emphasize things like sharing, loving one another, forgiveness, hope, kindness, courage, generosity, joy, etc. These values are like mini lessons, usually a paragraph long, about how behave and develop our characters. They’re accompanied by one of the VeggieTales characters, such as Bob, Archibald, Junior, Mr. Lunt, Larry, and the pea twins, Jean-Claude and Phillipe. The Index of Veggie Values is just that, an index of Veggie Values, similar in format to a concordance. A value is listed and then several verses that correspond to that value. These are helpful, I think, in that they break down passages for children and make them relatable as well as encourage readers to pursue lives lead by Biblical standards.
There are eight, four page, full color comics or graphic stories that summarize popular VeggieTales vidoes. These stories are: the Ballad of Little Joe; Babysitter in DeNile; Dave and the Giant Pickle; Esther the Girl Who Became Queen; Rack, Shack, and Benny; the Story of Jonah; An Easter Carol; and the Story of Flibber-o-loo. They are a fun addition for VeggieTales fans, and at the end of each story, they refer readers back to the original passage in the Bible.
Each book of the Bible is introduced by a VeggieTales character. These are one-page introductions that include who wrote the books, what the books teach, stories or interesting passages in the books, important people in the books, and just some general need-to-know things about each book.
Remember This is a feature similar to the Veggie Values. They are simply specific verses highlighted throughout the Bible, given their own little space and blown up a little bigger on the page. These are not actual highlighted passages with a highlighter or enlarged verses in the text, but a repetition of the verses that have been enlarged, such as you would find in an article, magazine, or blog.
All in all, I cherish this edition. This is my Bible. I have several editions, but this is my favorite, the one I turn to, the one I study daily. I would highly recommend this version for kids who love VeggieTales, kids who are transitioning from story Bibles to the actual Bible, and for fun-lovers of the video series. This is an excellent presentation of the Word of God.
