My Review:
This is a quick read, but it packs a little punch. I wasn’t familiar with Watchman Nee until my bible study started to study Ephesians and my leader brought this book to our attention.
It’s essentially just three chapters – Sit, Walk, Stand. 😀 This isn’t a verse by verse or even chapter by chapter study of Ephesians, but Nee draws from the themes of Ephesians and references specific verses to support his points. I wouldn’t call it a commentary or a study so much as inspired by Ephesians.
With some helpful anecdotes and illustrations, Nee walks through three ideas that stem from Paul’s letter, ideas he proposes are the foundation for the Christian way of life. I enjoyed the simplicity of Nee’s Sit, Walk, Stand and found some inspirational sections I’m still pondering over.
I think my largest takeaway is the refreshing reminder to know who God is and who we are in Him. He has already finished the work and the idea that we must start resting in His finished work is beautiful and powerful. The encouragement to walk among our brothers in the love of Christ, to bear His image, and practically live out our values is a much needed one in the hearts of our society today. And the call to stand against the evil in our broken world ravaged by the vile wickedness of the fall should challenge us to rise up from that place of sitting with God and to love our brothers as we walk with them in a whole new way.
I’m intrigued by Nee’s work and curious to read more some day. This one is a quick, easy read that can inspire and challenge Christians today to orient themselves first to God and then once we surrender to His identity, defined by Him, and soaking through with His Spirit, go and face the world in His victory and His holy plan. Highly recommended.
