Siren’s Song by Mary Weber
Fantasy. 360 Pages. 4 Stars
Synopsis:
Nym and Draewulf prepare to face off in a battle destined to destroy more lives than it saves.
With the loss of Tulla still fresh in mind, Rasha’s fate unknown, and Lord Myles taken over by the dark ability, Nym and the few Bron soldiers rush to warn Cashlin’s queen. Only to discover it may already be too late for the monarch and her eerie kingdom. As the Luminescents are sifting through Nym’s past memories and the queen is reading into her future, Nym is given a choice of how to defeat Draewulf, but the cost may be more than she can bear. And even then there are no guarantees.
With that reality burrowing into her bones—along with the guilt of the lives she will sacrifice—Nym returns to her homeland of Faelen to raise an army of peasants through promises of freedom. But when the few friends she has left, along with the world and citizens she loves, are staring down the face of a monster and his undead army, will Nym summon every element her blood is capable of controlling . . . or surrender to a different strength—one of sacrifice?
Because in the end, death may be more merciful for them all.
My Review:
First off, THAT COVER Y’ALL! 😀 Okay, so this is the conclusion to Mrs. Weber’s Storm Siren Trilogy. She has taken me on an emotional roller coaster ride for sure. The world is complex and it seems to expand even more with each book. Each newly introduced culture was just as rich and individual as the one before. The characters are each unique and bring something special to the table of their own. Weber’s writing style was unusual, I thought, but not in a bad way. She handled the first person present tense very well. The plot has been intriguing from the beginning. This book certainly came to a satisfying end.
I would say that there were several moments in which I was just straight up confused. It was mostly the mystical moments where I just felt swept up in the swirly mass of…magic? I eventually just had to go with it and see what happened as a result.
For parents, yes there is violence, and yes, some of it is kind of graphic. It isn’t Braveheart or Kill Bill, but it is war and at times descriptive. Additionally, there is a central romance throughout the books. Though this is handled tastefully and with nothing explicit, there was quite a bit of it. I love a sweet romance as well as the next girl, but Nym’s thoughts were quite often romantic, which I sort of tired of eventually. (That said, BOY there are some sweet moments!) And, lastly, there is no “swearing” by our standards. Weber has created her own swear terms, which I find softens the blow. Overall, I would recommend, but not to the young ones.
